The coverage of culture in the newsreel was often a bone of contention in the relationship between the newsreel and its critics from the written press. The producers of News in Pictures were constantly criticised on cultural matters, whether for not including enough culture, for getting distracted by minor cultural issues not worth covering, or for overstretching themselves by attempting to approach too complex cultural debates.
