News from agriculture was one of the monthly educational periodicals produced by the Sahia studio starting from the early 1950s. The periodical circulated exclusively in Romania’s rural communities and included topics of interest to their residents, programmed according to their seasonal activities. The current subject, filmed in the Giurgiu region, aimed to dispel the peasants’ mistrust in the representatives of the state – in this case, the doctors and veterinary technicians who were present in the villages as part of the veterinary commissions sent to document and maintain the health of animals.

The subject is structured as a story told by a peasant who evolves on the path from mistrust to trust in the authorities – a tried and tested narrative from the era of collectivization, in which the voice of the character is incorporated into the voice-over commentary (see, for example, Ion Marin’s Letter to “Scânteia”, Victor Iliu, 1949 – published on the dvd SAHIA VINTAGE IV: Political Commissioning). The story of the peasant who decides to trust the state after seeing his horse cured by a team from the veterinary hospital in Giurgiu (Southern Romania), which works “according to science”, allows a timely foray into the dangers of scientific atheism (see the character of the old peasant woman baba Floarea, who attempts a traditional healing through spells). Right at the end, we are reminded of the correct conclusion in the imperative, unambiguous format frequently seen in the agricultural journals: “Working peasants, trust our veterinarians!” (AB)
