Passing the Baton of Peace and Friendship

News in Pictures Nr. 30/1953, Subject unic

This subject makes up the entirety of newsreel no. 30/1953, which is why it is referred to as a “single subject”; its length attests to the importance given to this topic within the historical and cultural context of 1953. That summer, Romania hosted two major international events aimed at young people: the Third World Youth Congress (July 25-30) and the Fourth World Festival of Youth and Students (August 2-14). Communist leaders saw these international festivals as opportunities to consolidate their power, using them as propaganda tools modelled after Soviet practices, often framed under the banner of the “fight for peace.” On the other hand, these festivals, which brought tens of thousands of young people from around the world to Romania, offered local residents in the host cities a rare chance to engage directly with foreign visitors, providing a temporary escape from the insularity imposed by the regime.

For Romania in 1953, the International Youth Festival symbolized, in part, a brief moment of “thaw”—a shift that would only fully materialize in the years to come. However, it was also a time of economic strain, primarily due to the substantial organizational efforts required for the event, in particular the need to stockpile food to feed the tens of thousands of international participants. During this period, Romania undertook the construction of key landmarks such as the “23 August” stadium and the Opera House: both projects largely built through the voluntary labour of the youth, with the Opera House construction being resumed at a later date.

As anticipated, the documentation of the event highlighted the enthusiasm and the solidarity of the participants – as we can see in this fragment dedicated to the arrival of the festival relay from Hungary, as it made its way to Bucharest, passing through the cities Cluj, Sibiu and Brașov.

The Sahia Studio dedicated three full newsreel issues to the Youth Festival: Issue no. 30, which focused on the arrival of the festival relay, and numbers 31 and 32/1953: a double issue covering the festival’s opening and the parade of the national delegations. Here we have included the first few minutes of Newsreel no. 30.
